About The Talisman
The Talisman began in the 90s as a small house in Karen — once home to wildlife film-maker Alan Root — and grew into one of Nairobi's most quoted restaurants. The menu roams from feta and coriander samosas to Chinese stir-fry chilli beef, aged fillet and seafood, with an organic garden feeding the kitchen and a bar that keeps the courtyard full until 1am. Closed Mondays; reservations strongly advised at weekends.
Destinilo's take
Almost every long-time Nairobi resident has a Talisman story, and most of them start in the garden. The property is a converted Karen house — low rooms, heavy art, candles, a terrace that disappears under trees — and the cooking refuses to pick a lane, moving between European technique, pan-Asian heat and Kenyan produce on one page. It works because the kitchen is disciplined about the things it repeats: the feta and coriander samosas that nobody has successfully copied, a chilli beef that is genuinely chilli, fish handled with confidence, and desserts worth the extra half hour. It is not cheap and it is not quick. Come on a Saturday afternoon, sit outside, order samosas before you have decided anything else.
