The place

About Mama Rocks

Sisters Natalie and Samantha Mwedekeli left London in 2014 and started Mama Rocks as one of Nairobi's first street-food trucks. It is now a small chain of burger kitchens across Kilimani, Westlands, Rosslyn and Karen, built on pan-African flavour: suya, peri peri, berbere and coastal spice packed into charred, generously dressed burgers.

Destinilo's take

Mama Rocks is proof that a food truck idea can hold its shape at scale. The Mwedekeli sisters started in 2014 with a truck and a stubborn thesis — that African spice belongs in fast food, not as a garnish on it — and the burgers still taste like that argument. Patties are pushed hard on the grill, the sauces carry real heat, and the vegetarian option is not a consolation prize. Four Nairobi kitchens now, and the queue at Kilimani on a Friday night still moves like a truck window.
