The place

About Nyama Mama

Nyama Mama reimagines the Kenyan roadside kibanda as a bright two-floor diner at Delta Towers: kitenge fabric, hand-made furniture, washbasins by the door and a menu that runs from ugali fries and honey pepper wings to goat curry chapati and brioche French toast. Around 150 seats, an all-day kitchen and a bar known for tinned cocktails and Mama's Medicine.

Destinilo's take

Nyama Mama took the roadside diner — the kibanda, the enamel plate, the washbasin at the door — and rebuilt it in colour on two floors of Delta Towers. The trick is that the food is not a costume. Ugali fries with garlic sauce genuinely work, the ribs come with mokimo instead of an apology, the wings are marinated long enough to taste it, and breakfast runs all day for the people who need it to. It is loud, it photographs well, and it is still the easiest place in Nairobi to hand a visitor a Kenyan menu they will actually finish.
